The official Popcorn Time might be down but it’s still possible to make it work almost like nothing ever happened. While the website and the services behind the software are offline the bittorrent network isn’t affected and the client can thus be revived in a few ways.
We’ve already described how to bring the TV menu back and also outlined the process of manually searching in a previous post and both methods still work as intended. There’s also a thread on reddit explaining similar Popcorn Time fixes and there’s even a download link to an updated Popcorn Time installer where said fixes have been integrated. We can neither confirm or deny if the installer is legit so continue down this path at your own peril.
If you’ve already got the desktop client installed the people from VPN.ht have been so thoughtful to include an automatic Popcorn Time fix if you subscribe to their VPN service. Once connected to any of their servers and opening up the Popcorn Time client, you’ll shortly after be notified that an API fix has been installed. Upon restarting the program both TV show and movie menu will show up and work just like before.
It even looks like the menus work regardless of whether you’re connected to the VPN or not so if you don’t feel like a long-term commitment it’s an option to just pay for a single month which is only $1. That being said VPN.ht is an excellent VPN provider with a both fast and completely anonymous service founded by the same people that brought you Popcorn Time. It’s also very reasonably priced at only $40 for a year.
However, it might not be long before the official Popcorn Time website (popcorntime.io) and service are both back online. One of the people behind the service, a developer nicknamed “Wally”, recently gave the following statement:
“I am still considering a full comeback, I just do not want to release a half working version.”
We’re obviously keeping our fingers crossed that Wally will turn his consideration in to action.
